Visits

The cave tours are carried through established routes where the visitors can experience what it feels like to be inside a lava tunnel and get to know some facts and curiosities about volcanism, geodiversity and the biodiversity within Sao Miguel island.

Prior to each visit there is a briefing and a small video about Azores volcanic caves is displayed.

There are two types of tours available for the visitors:

  • Small route tours, with an easy level of difficulty (1);
  • Long route Tours, with a medium level of difficulty (2);

The small route tours or general public tours cover some 200 meters of the lava tunnel and are accompanied by a guide.Below we give you some useful information.

  1. Maximum number of visitor per tour: 15

  2. Average lenght of the tour: 45 minutes

  3. Personal protective equipment provided: helmet

The long route tours or speleology tours explore around 800 metres of the lava tunnel and are accompanied by a guide specialized in speleology.Below we give you some useful information.

  1. Maximum number of visitors per tour: 4

  2. Minimum age required: 10 years old

  3. Personal protective equipment provided: helmet, gloves knee and front lighting

  4. Requires booking in advance and a minimum of 2 visitors

 

General recommendations

In any of the cases it is recommendable to wear comfortable shoes and keep in mind to bring a jacket or a warmer shirt since the temperature inside the cave is slightly colder than outside (around 15 ° C).
